Definition Of Asbestos

Here are some good definitions of what exactly asbestos is and what it is used for.

#1 Any of several fibrous mineral forms of magnesium silicate. And some uses of this asbestos material include fireproofing, building materials, brake linings, electrical insulation, and chemical filters.

#2 Asbestos is the name of a group of similar minerals with separable, long, and thin fibers. Asbestos has long been suspected as a health threat to humans, because once the fibers are inhaled, they are difficult to remove from the lungs. Now we know the use of asbestos and asbestos materials has dramatically decreased, but they are still found in many residential and commercial settings.

#3 Asbestos is a mineral fiber that has been used commonly in a variety of building construction materials for insulation and as a fire-retardant. Because of its fiber strength and heat resistant properties, asbestos has been used for a wide variety of manufactured products, mostly in building materials (roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, paper products, and asbestos cement products), friction products (automobile clutch, brake, and transmission parts), heat-resistant fabrics, packaging, gaskets, and coatings.

When asbestos-containing materials are damaged or disturbed by remodeling or other activities, the tiny fibers simply float into the air and can be inhaled into the lungs. And of course this can cause serious health problems including lung cancer.
